Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille will lead residents and elected officials on Sunday in welcoming Hon. Adam O'Neal, the Republican mayor of Belhaven, N.C., to discuss the importance of expanding Medicaid and closing the coverage gap to families and health care providers. Mayor O'Neal is currently walking nearly 300 miles from Belhaven to Washington, D.C., to highlight the impact of closing the coverage gap on local communities. He will stop in Woodbridge, Va., on Saturday evening, and Alexandria will be his final stop before reaching the nation’s capital. The Alexandria City Council strongly supports Medicaid expansion as one of its formal legislative priorities.
Mayor O'Neal became an outspoken critic of political obstruction to Medicaid expansion, when his local hospital was closed as a direct result of the failure to expand Medicaid. In Lee County, Va., one hospital has already closed and additional facilities in Northern Virginia face financial pressures that could impact their ability to continue to serve their communities.
