Belhaven Mayor Adam O’Neal said he will begin a walk on Monday from Vidant Pungo Hospital in Belhaven to Washington, D.C. in protest of the hospital’s closure on July 1.
O’Neal has been outspoken against the action since plans to close the hospital were announced in September. He said he will make the walk to protest Vidant’s action, calling it immoral, seek new legislation that prevents closure of critical access hospitals without at least a year’s notice, push for Medicaid expansion in North Carolina and highlight rural health care struggles.
The Pungo closing was delayed 90 days in accordance with Vidant CEO Dr. David Herman’s written agreement in April to support Belhaven and O’Neal’s efforts to find a new hospital operator. Those efforts were unsuccessful within the allotted time and Vidant went ahead with its original plans.
